Long-time GEAA supporters Fred and Carol Fisher are hosting a fundraiser breakfast for us next Saturday, March 13th – featuring eggs from their backyard henhouse and Carlos Guerra’s famous cinnamon buns while supplies last. Feel free to stop by 334 Shannon Lee here in San Antonio anytime between 9:00 and 10:30 am to break bread (homemade, of course) with us and put some money in the kitty for GEAA while you’re there. January Conference: Pumping Limits for Texas Aquifers: Desired Future Conditions Process
The Texas A&M Graduate Water Program, Texas Agrilife Extension, and the Texas Water Development Board have planned a conference addressing pumping limits for Texas’ aquifers and the desired future condition process. The upcoming conference is scheduled for January 20-21, 2010, and will be held at the Thompson Conference Center on the UT Austin campus. The slate of speakers represents some of the most important players in groundwater management in Texas and the various presentations are sure to address many of the most challenging issues currently facing groundwater managers in Texas. Edwards Endangered Species Finally Protected
The Center for Biological Diversity and two GEAA member groups, AGUA and Citizen’s Alliance for Smart Expansion (CASE), settled a major lawsuit to protect endangered species found only in the Edwards Aquifer and Comal Springs on Friday, December 18, 2009. The settlement with US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) represents a significant victory in the aquifer protection wars. In response to the lawsuit, the Obama administration agreed to reconsider critical habitat designation for 12 endangered Texas invertebrates, including three species from Comal Springs and nine species from caves in Bexar County. These 12 species are immediately threatened by excessive water withdrawal
