  1. Vegetation mats and other runoff mitigation methods are NOT always effective, especially under certain field conditions , over karst areas OR based on chemical properties of the contaminants. Vegetative barriers are helpful with particulates and heavy metals and are often considered a first step used in conjunction with other methods. Soluble pollutants are an entirely different issue. Of the over 500 compounds ( and breakdown products) evaluated by a national urban runoff study MANY have not been well evaluated..
    Huge topic, in summary we should NOT be entirely reassured by these ” best practice” measures, particularly over a karst area.
