Building on efforts from a previous group of Texas State students from Dr. Yihong Yuan’s 2022 Geographic Information Science (GIS) Design & Implementation Class at Texas State University (TSU), a team of three new students have developed an updated map of wastewater treatment facilities (WWTFs) within the Edwards Aquifer region. This updated interactive web map and dashboard will allow GEAA and our project partners access to facility information on WWTFs within the region of the Edwards Aquifer and its nearby surrounding area. Facility information data was gathered from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and includes items such as permitted discharge parameters, information on the permittee, and any notices of violation or enforcement associated with the facility.
With this map, students conducted an overlay analysis to pinpoint high-risk WWTF areas within the Edwards Aquifer region based on their proximity to an impaired water source and the facility’s location in relation to the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone. The interactive map will help further GEAA’s ongoing research of the impacts of sewage and WWTFs on the Edwards Aquifer region.
